(The Hit Hammer is where I'm reviewing each #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Starting from when the chart started in 1958 and eventually working my way to the present. To see my inspiration and more information about the blog, please refer to the "Poor Little Fool" post.)
Elvis Presley - "Stuck On You"
Hit Number 1: April 25, 1960
Stay at Number 1: 4 Weeks
After the King got back from serving time in the military, he had a different sound. No longer doing his rock and roll sound, he used his golden voice that he was always capable of using, more often. There weren't any kickass guitar solos like we saw in "A Big Hunk O' Love", but he still had a very unique sound, and you knew as soon as you listened to something by him, no matter what era it was, you knew you were listening to Elvis Presley. That's one of the many reasons why he was great. And his next #1, "Stuck On You" was a big indication on what we were about to see from him.
"Stuck On You" is a song that portrays Presley as a stalker, more or less. He says things about the girl saying "I'm gonna run my fingers through your long black hair" and "You can never shake me". Things like that. There are other lyrics that let you know that this is not a girl that the narrator is already in a relationship with. This is a guy who has his eyes on a specific girl, and he is going to stop at nothing to make her his. But the best thing about this song, is the way it sounds. It's bluesy, catchy, and ultimately just a great time. Presley lets loose in the chorus shouting "A team of wild horses couldn't tear us apart!" The song is not his best work ever, but it shows just what the King was capable of, and it is a personal favorite of mine by him.
Let me just add one more note too. I obviously would not be someone that would condone stalking. But man, I bet there would be several girls in this time period that would not mind at all being stalked by Elvis Presley. They probably thought "Man, this girl is lucky". And why not? This guy was the most screamed at by girls in live performances before the Beatles showed up, and his music was a big staple of American history. "Stuck On You" is just one of the many great songs that were delivered to us by this music legend.
