THE HIT HAMMER: The Fleetwoods' "Mr. Blue"

The Fleetwoods' "Mr. Blue"

The Fleetwoods - "Mr. Blue"

Hit Number 1: November 16, 1959

Stay at Number 1: 1 Week

If someone were to ask you who the first artist was to have two #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, The Fleetwoods would probably not be the first act to come to your mind. But low and behold, they were the first ones to have two #1 Hot 100 hits with "Come Softly to Me" that hit earlier in 1959, and now today with "Mr. Blue". The songs are pretty similar, in that they both have an acapella like sound to them, but at the same time they are also pretty different.

"Mr. Blue" is a song about a guy who knows his lover is cheating on him, so he gets sad whenever she says she loves him. He doesn't want to confront her about it though cause he doesn't want to "hurt his pride". The song barely moves along, and it is in fact a very sad song, unlike the happy-sounding "Come Softly to Me". I do like the songs about the same though, cause I like how the Fleetwoods use their voices and acapella skills on the tracks. Is it a song that's going to liven up your day? Hell no. Is it a good piece of songcraft though? Yes.
