(The Hit Hammer is where I'm reviewing each #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Starting from when the chart started in 1958 and eventually working my way to the present. To see my inspiration and more information about this blog, please refer to the "Poor Little Fool" post)

The Supremes - "Come See About Me"

Hit Number 1: December 19, 1964

Stay at Number 1: 2 Weeks

It was about now that people had to know. They had to know that they were hearing a girl group that wasn't "just another girl group". Not that it was much of a record, but when "Come See About Me" hit #1 on the Hot 100, the Supremes were the girl group with the most #1 singles with 3. It also tied them with Connie Francis for the most #1 singles on the Hot 100 by any female act. Of course, they would shatter Francis' record after it's all said and done. "Come See About Me" is pretty similar to the Supremes' previous #1 hits, but it's also kind of different.

For starters, "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Baby Love" are very upbeat songs that are actually sad songs about love on the rocks. "Come See About Me" is also an upbeat song, and was also written by the Holland-Dozier-Holland team, but it's very different lyrics wise. Instead of a relationship in danger of failing, the song is about a girl who is longing for a guy, and she wants him to give her a shot, hence "come see about me". It's definitely a simple song, but maybe too simple for its own good. "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Baby Love" were far more exciting songs, and have aged a lot better than "Come See About Me". Where people still recognize those first two songs today, "Come See About Me" seems to have just vanished altogether.

For me at least, it's easier to get into the first two Supremes songs because of their happy nature, and Diana Ross' voice on the songs. Don't get me wrong, "Come See About Me" is a good song, and Ross' voice on this song is about as great as it was on the other two, but it doesn't make me move, or keep the beat, or anything like that. It's nearly impossible to listen to "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Baby Love" without at the very least tapping your foot, but I can easily listen to "Come See About Me" without doing any of that. That's strictly just me, and I don't expect that to be a thing for most people, but this is my blog and my reviews. It's also hard for groups like the Supremes that have so many hits, that even a good song of theirs' kind of flies under the radar. "Come See About Me" is one of those songs.
