THE HIT HAMMER: The Supremes' "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone"

(The Hit Hammer is where I'm reviewing each #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Starting from when the chart started in 1958 and eventually working my way to the present. To see my inspiration and more information about this blog, please refer down below)

The Supremes - "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone"

Hit Number 1: March 11, 1967

Stay at Number 1: 1 Week

This is the kind of stuff I had been warning you guys about. I'll always say (unless there is something dramatic in my lifetime) that the Supremes are the greatest girl group ever, but there was a time where they were releasing sub-par material, and that material was somehow yielding hits. Nothing changed as far as their songwriters went, still having Motown's finest Holland-Dozier-Holland writing and producing their music, but there came a moment it stalled. I'm not sure, but I think this kind of stuff might have had to do with the fact that people loved the Supremes at that time, so they would buy anything the group did. Even underwhelming songs like "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone".

I'm also pretty shocked to report that Holland-Dozier-Holland member, Eddie Holland, claimed "Love Is Here" to be his favorite Supremes' song. Like, seriously dude? Out of all the previous great Supremes songs, THIS is your favorite? Look, this song isn't horrible I guess, just very lousy when you compare it to the group's previous hits. In a way, the song is a flashback to when they first started out, as it's about a love that is starting to break apart. But the string section isn't very lush, it's just kind of flat and frail. Diana Ross has a few parts of the song in spoken dialogue that only makes her sound like a diva, and the song doesn't build up to anything exciting or memorable. It's an underwhelming attempt at making a quality song. In fact, this thing is so unmemorable or unimportant, that that's really all I've got with this one.
