THE HIT HAMMER: Tommy Edwards' "It's All In the Game"

Tommy Edwards' "It's All In the Game"

Tommy Edwards - "It's All In the Game"

Hit Number 1: September 29, 1958

Stay At Number 1: 6 Weeks

For a few weeks in the latter part of 1958, there was an okay, but unexciting song that topped the charts for 6 weeks. That would be Tommy Edwards' "It's All In the Game", a pretty enough song, but bland at the same time.

"It's All In the Game" is a song in the second-person point-of-view about someone (probably a girl) who is going through a hard time in a relationship. Edwards comes across as someone who is stalking or watching this girl from a distance, and narrating the process of this. According to Edwards, everything seems to work out in the end as he says "soon he'll be there by your side" and "your hearts will fly away". If only it always worked that way Edwards.

As I said, the song is pretty, but it's kind of boring. It doesn't really go anywhere, and it is too repetitive for me. It's the first #1 since "Poor Little Fool" that has the "Poor Little Fool effect". Meaning that it just repeats itself over and over again. There are some backup singers that keep it from getting too bad, but it's just a boring song. "Poor Little Fool" at least was somewhat fun and interesting to listen to, but I just don't get that same impression with "It's All In the Game".

As for Edwards, he would not hit #1 again, He did however, have a few sparse hits, but none that would be bigger than this song. His career began to decline in the 60s, and he later died in 1969 of a brain aneurysm. Although his one mega hit was pretty boring, obviously some people really like this song. So I guess good for him in that regard.

GRADE: 4/10

THE TWOS:

Bobby Day's "Rock-in Robin" peaked at #2 behind "It's All In the Game". It's an 8.

THE TENS:

Eddie Cochran's fun rockabilly song "Summertime Blues" peaked at #8 behind "It's All In the Game". It's a 10.
